What Bizarre Craigslist Trade Have You Been Offered?

Here is a list of items I was offered in a trade for a relatively inexpensive project car I posted for sale. Nowhere in the ad did I mention I was interested in trades. Also had a guy call me and chat randomly for over a half hour before telling me he had no intention of purchasing the car.

Rare ccs (central cycle supply)still original condition mini bike from the 70`s, high end jenson home speakers, hundreds of ral partha, grenadier and others pewter figures.

15" truck tires on chevy 5 lug rims, old school aluminum slots with 15" tires and spinners, new set of 15" 50`s, set of 16" tires, car audio

Not weird but was a good deal for me: I had a 2004 Megane RS I bought a few months earlier for 6500€ for sale for 8500€, and ended up trading it for an Audi A4 which I sold a few months later for 9000€.
I hope I can reproduce this experiment someday.

I’ve got a set of 33" mud tires posted on CL currently for $450 or trade for things that go boom... It seems they would fit the demographic of someone with an abundance of said currency, but I still haven’t had any offers.

Ive done a few guns for vehicles trades over the years. I traded a Husqvarna tractor for smith M&P and a Ruger 10/22 to a police officer once.

The oddest cl encounter was a man who had bought a property that belonged to a former motorcycle dealer and had 100+ bikes out in the woods. That one was pretty awesome, but probably will never come across something like that again.

Actually I just realized you sold the Alfa last week. Depending on what you got for it, money was probably a better deal, unless it was a super nice AR, like a DD V11 Pro with a quality optic or something. Due to a variety of factors, they are quite cheap at the moment

I don’t remember the specifics(this was a few months ago)but it was pretty nice and would’ve been a reasonably fair trade. I was looking for about a grand(which is what I got). And the thing with cash is now if I want to waste it on an AR15 I can. Or another dumb project car. Or use it for something responsible(doubtful).

I posted my Nova on Craigslist and got three different trade offers from three different people for the same year/model Harley-Davidson on the same day. Unless all three were trying to trade the exact same bike, there must be something wrong with 2013 Street Glides...

I was also offered a non-running quad bike for my old SVX. That one made me laugh.

Seriously? That’s about the only thing I’ve ever been offered. I accepted it once (a Mosin & a double-barrel for a wrecked ‘81 Goldwing), but usually they’re insultingly low valued (a generic single-shot .22 for a good running car, etc.)

I’ve done a fair bit of trading on Craigslist: Traded a Jimmy for a Suburban (same age and mileage, but the Suburban had tranny trouble.) Traded an older 18' gooseneck flatbed for an ‘05 bumper-pull car hauler. Traded a non-running Baja Beetle for a Goldwing, then later traded that for a couple guns after I wrecked it. Traded a high-mileage ‘05 Sebring for an ‘03 Escape.

I’ve done pretty pretty well so far. Every time I offer anything on craigslist, though, I get lots of offers for single-shot rifles & shotguns. I mean, seriously, how are there so many people with single-shot rifles & shotguns that think they’re worth the value of a car?

I got offered a few things by a couple different people on Kijiji when I was selling my E36, apart from the countless lowball offers.

One offered a smartphone, Xbox 360 and a digital DJ turntable, while person 2 was offering a (rather extremely out of date) Alienware gaming PC, and yet another offered speakers and other crap he didn’t need. Funny thing was, they were looking for a car to make a ‘race car’ build out of. Ended up selling it to some guy who whipped out $400 under my nose, so I took it.

Maybe I need to step my Craigslist game up. The problem I would have, at this point, is that it would be hard to offer me something I don’t already have or isn’t equivalent to something I have, and I’m also running out of room... until I move and get a bigger safe.

But that’s a pretty good trade for the wrecked Goldwing. Mosins are starting to go up in value. I got one a few years ago when they were around $125, now most places want $250.

When I sold my other ‘64 pickup(asking $6500, which was knowingly optimistic since I didn’t need to sell) the ad said I would consider pre-65 cars & trucks + cash in trade.

Every single offer I got was to swap straight up for:

-’00 Ford F150

-’96 Ford Ranger

-’93 Harley Sportser

Not one of which were worth half my asking price. I ended up selling the truck for $4500 to the first person who showed up with cash.

it wasn’t really bizarre, just fucking stupid. In 2009 I listed my SRT-4 on CL since I had just picked up a new 2010 Mustang GT. Even though I said “no trades” some idiot asked if I’d trade for a 2001 Audi A4. I’m like “no, you dimp, this may be a Neon but it’s still more reliable* than a 2001 Audi.” ended up keeping it for a few more years until I found a low-mileage Ranger.

in fact, the worst/stupidest part of when I listed my SRT on CL isn’t from someone offering a jack-assed trade, but some guy texted me. he said “are you selling the SRT?” when I replied in the affirmative, all he did was send me a bunch of pics of his totally built Eclipse. I spent the next few days wondering if he was actually trying to hit on me.

* I separate “reliability” into two categories: 1) “reliability” meaning “can I count on this car getting me where I need to go, and 2) “durability” meaning “how often am I going to have to fix stuff on this thing. My SRT-4 was absolutely a reliable car; the only (ONLY!) time I had to limp it into the shop in the 170,000 miles I owned it was when it lunched the cam sensor at 101k. It was in no way, shape, or form a durable car. That goddamned thing ate front suspension/driveline parts like... well... like a Neon. I don’t know how many control arm bushings, wheel bearings, halfshafts, calipers, etc. I put in it. but those things all give you plenty of warning before they fail, so I was able to plan for some wrenching.

Yeah, I don’t think it was a bad deal for me at all. The Mosin hasn’t been fired since being imported, and is in excellent shape. I’ve had it for a couple years now, and haven’t fired it yet, so maybe I should just sit on it and sell it when it’s worth more. Then again, I don’t actually have a good hunting rifle. Oh well, it’ll probably just rust in my safe another decade before I do anything with it; it’s not like I ever go hunting anymore.
